"A worthy tradition of Lent is to partake in the Sacrament of Penance. God’s love for us is always bountiful and He desires us to turn away from sin, be forgiven and be faithful to the Gospel. Lent is the perfect time for us to stand before our merciful God and asking for His forgiveness through Confession." Archbishop James F. Checchio
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. CLICK ON THIS BOX FOR THE FULL SCHEDULE OF SERVICES FOR LENT & EASTER 2026 and for the rules for fasting and abstinence during Lent.

Congratulations to SMM Parishioners Will Vanderbrook and Julie Fabregas, the 2026 Order of St. Louis IX recipients from St. Mary Magdalen Parish. The award was established in 1975 to recognize laypersons in each parish of the Archdiocese of New Orleans who have selflessly contributed their time and talent to the Church. Our parish family is truly grateful for their service to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, and we congratulate them on this well-deserved honor. Will and Julie will receive their award on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at St. Catherine of Siena Church.
On Thursday, February 26, 2026, Archbishop Hughes conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on twenty-three high school students from St. Mary Magdalen and Our Lady of Divine Providence Parishes. We congratulate our Young Church on their decision to follow Christ more deeply, and we pray that the Gifts of the Holy Spirit will strengthen and guide them.
